Aims of Department
Our aim in the Languages Department is to provide quality teaching and learning which is centred upon the needs of the child, giving pupils the opportunity to reach their full potential.
We continually aim to promote the ethos of Edmund Rice at all times. We aim to promote positive attitudes to language learning as a means of providing enjoyment and intellectual stimulation. To develop pupil’s abilities to communicate effectively in the target language, through both the spoken and written word, using a range of vocabulary and structures. To provide opportunities through Modern Languages for the personal and social development of the pupils. We also aim to encourage skills, language and attitudes which will be useful for further study and for vocational and leisure application and to encourage positive attitudes of tolerance and understanding of speakers of other languages. We also aim to develop knowledge and understanding of communities where Irish is spoken such as the Gaeltacht area of Belfast and Donegal. Visits to the Culturlánn are regular and we have a trip to the Gaeltacht each year. We take part in various Irish speaking events such as Seachta na Gaelige and the Gael Linn quiz.
Outline of Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5
KEY STAGE 3
In year 8 pupils study all three languages. In years 9 and 10 they choose two to study. Irish is very popular. Topics include hobbies, sports, school, describing others, where you live, weather, and nationalities. In Language class we do a lot of games, songs and watch films to help engage the pupils as much as possible. We try to be involved in as many Irish speaking events in the Belfast area as possible.
KEY STAGE 4
At KS4 students follow the CCEA GCSE Specification and have four examinations at the end of Year 12 in Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. Topics studied include holidays, health, free time, festivals and future plans. BBC Bitesize, Memrise, and CCEA are excellent websites for GCSE Irish.
Career Opportunities
Careers is an integral part of Language learning. Careers are part of our School topic at KS3 and Future plans at KS4. We use the world of work as a context for using the language, we write to pen friends to find out about their family’s careers and local employment. We write CVs and do interview practice through the target language. Some careers with languages include a teacher, tour manager, lawyer or air steward.
